Heritage 1 " De-waniya "
Heritage 1 " De-waniya "
I thought i would share something about parts of our cultural traditions, We have something called the De-Waniya, All men in Kuwait belong to a diwaniya or have their own diwaniya. The word finds its origins in the word diwan. The diwan was the office of the Amir where he met his subjects, listened to their problems and met members of the community to hold consultations with them.
Today's diwaniyas are a meeting place for men, where topics such as politics, business, the stock exchange etc are discussed. It is also a way of staying in touch with friends, exchanging ideas and keeping relationships alive in today's fast paced life.
Diwaniya is normally a large reception room within or outside the main house, with all facilities to make family or friends comfortable including tea and snacks.
The diwaniyas are a barometre of public opinion, a unique institution that has existed throughout the history of Kuwait.
Nearly every house in Kuwait has a De-waniya, my husband goes there ever thursday since thursday and friday is a weekend here, its like saturday sunday USA or foriegn countries.

anytime guys:)... what about u? is there some kind of gathering rituals hehe that u do?
So if they have that for the men, what do they have for the women? Are women ever allowed in there?
yes women have a thing of their own, but diwaniya's cant be entered by men, like ew cant have a mixed one.
women have something called " chai thaha" which means afternoon tea, women gather and talk over tea and gossip, and we dont have that in specific days hehe sometimes this is like everyday:P
and when women do gather each one brings a dish that she cooked and have a feast of their own, talking about different things. and men are not allowed in:P
but in my own family we do have occasions such as mother day, new year, our own birthdays, valentine, that we all celebrate together. its a family thing with us:)
valentine's day i spend it with my husband alll morning and afternoon then at night everybody gathers at our family house for a big feast we celebrate it hehe we celebrate practically anything hehe "our family" that is.
Fantasia, I find this very interesting.
